For Adib Fricke, words form the foundation of his artistic practice. Since the late 1980s, the conceptual artist has been exploring the multifaceted nature of language, focusing on expanded possibilities for working with words, the ways linguistic units function within art, and how we generate meaning.
How does language behave when it takes on physical presence? What reactions do linguistic irritations provoke? How does color influence our perception of words? How does our experience of space change in connection with text?
With precision and depth, Adib Fricke questions the materiality of language and plays with its plasticity. His work is an experimental process that challenges the viewer’s perception. The book “All These Words” brings together recent works and earlier ones, making visible his ongoing engagement with language as a medium of visual art. It features, among others, works from the current “PTC” series, which explores the interplay between language and image; the long-running project “The Word Company”, in which Fricke created and circulated words without meaning; early computer-based works from the early 1990s; and text-based installations in public space.
Fricke’s practice also engages with neuroscientific questions related to art and creativity. In “How Art Is Made”, for example, he integrates reflection on how art comes into being directly into the creative process.
The catalogue offers insight into his body of text based work and conveys the diverse questions that shape Adib Fricke’s artistic approach.
